What is xianxia?

From Wikiedia, Xianxia (simplified Chinese: 仙侠; traditional Chinese: 仙俠) is a genre of Chinese fantasy influenced by Chinese mythology, Taoism, Buddhism, Chinese martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese folk religion, Chinese alchemy and other traditional Chinese elements.

Protagonists are usually “cultivators” (修心者 xiūzxinhě, 修士 xiūshì, or 修仙者 xiūxiānzhě) who seek to become immortal beings called xian. Along the way, they attain eternal life, supernatural powers, and incredible levels of strength. The fictional cultivation practiced in xianxia is heavily based on the real-life meditation practice qigong.

The stories usually include elements such as gods, immortals, yaoguai, ghosts, monsters, magical treasures, immortal items, medicinal pills, and the like. They often take place in a “cultivation world” where cultivators engage in fierce and usually deadly struggles to acquire the resources they need to grow stronger. Oftentimes, the initial setting is reminiscent of ancient China, but the stories usually become cosmic in nature, with the protagonists attaining godlike abilities, sometimes creating their own planets, galaxies or universes. While the primary focus is action and adventure, there are also romance-heavy stories.

Facts from cultivator universe:

In episode 1, what was supposed to be an airplane looks like a giant sword flying through the sky. It’s because cultivators use flying swords as one of their modes of transportation.

Probably Huaxiu is a country & Songhai is a city. They may be based on the country, China & its city, Shanghai.

Cultivators use pills & meditation to help their cultivation. By cultivating, they become stronger as they break through to the next realm. However, some realms require cultivators to go through trials. If they pass the trial, they can go to the next realm; but if not, they risk getting demoted to a lower realm & their cultivation will be affected & possibly reincarnated in a new body.

Cultivators have their own groups called sects. Each sect has their own cultivation techniques & martial arts techniques that’s only passed down to members of the sect. But in this story, the groups were called factions.

Chinese students refer to their teachers by their last name.

For those unfamiliar with Chinese names:

In Chinese names, the first Chinese character represents the last name or family name & second and third characters represent the first name or given name.

Ex: Wang Zukang, Wang is the family name & Zukang is the first name. In English arrangement of the name, first name then last name; it’d be Zukang Wang.
