Hudson & Rex Season 1 Episode 2 – Fearless Freaks

There’s a man calling & scolding his son about the car. Not long after he steps away from the car, someone falls down from the roof onto the car, a masked man.

Hudson & Rex arrive at the scene. Someone tries to stop Rex. Truong was already at the scene. She says that the masked victim was intoxicated at the time of death. Rex smells something & barks at the victim’s fingers. White powder was found in the nail, possibly a drug substance on hand. Truong bags it as evidence. Hudson questions a worker there. He says he just started his shift. Then, Hudson & Rex went up to the roof. Mills was at the roof dealing with the scene there. Mills figured out who the masked victim was. The masked victim was part of the Fearless Freaks, a parkour group. And the masked victim wasn’t alone when he fell as he was videoed. The masked victim was called Birdie in the video. The other two people in the Fearless Freaks are Thrill Girl & Monster.

Donovan informs Hudson that the lab results are done. Also, he mentions that there’s a formal complaint about Rex. Hudson guessed it must be Renley, a police dog trainer. Donovan reassures Hudson that Rex is important to Major Crimes.

At the forensics lab, the victim’s tox screen report was clean. He just handled the coke (short for cocaine). Hudson wonders if he’s not a druggie, why handle the coke. There seems to be a concussion on Birdie’s head.

Mills managed to find the guy who managed the website. His name is Marc Trainer. He used to run with the Fearless Freaks but now has a job at Wall Street. Marc provided the names & identified them. Birdie is Kyle Woods, Daria Cross is Thrill Girl & Craig Templeton is Monster. After Marc goes away, Hudson notices Rex looking at a hotdog stand. Hudson bought two hotdogs for them.

Hudson visits the address given by Marc & knocks on a door. A girl answers the door. Hudson asks if Kyle Woods lives here. The girl says no one lives here by that name. As they were talking, the worker from earlier called the girl, Daria & was seen by Hudson. The worker is Craig Templeton. Seeing that both lied, Hudson wants the truth from them. Rex found a little cocaine on the table. Daria defends Kyle saying that he’s an ex- drug addict & has been clean. They were having a party & drinking. There was a 4th person, Melissa Lake, with them at the party but left the party early. Melissa was Kyle’s fiance; they just got engaged. Daria doesn’t know what to say to Melissa due to what happened to Kyle. Hudson asks about Kyle had a concussion. They say that injuries normally happen in their stunts.

Melissa cries as she sees Kyle’s corpse. Melissa mentions a drug test to prove he’s clean to prove himself to Melissa’s dad, Ron Lake. Ron doesn’t approve of Kyle. He’s an ex-attorney. He wants his daughter to be happy & wishes she’ll move on from Kyle’s death soon.

Donovan seems to know Ron Lake as he was a counsel previously & was problematic to Donovan then. Mills notices that there’s an angle that wasn’t shown in the video as all stunts were recorded all around. Hudson had a brief talk with Renley before heading off.

Hudson decides to visit the roof again to check if they miss something. A woman was there checking the scene of where the accidental fall occurred. Her name is Lizzy Rosebrook, a parkour. She mentions that there’s a parkour community. She was wondering why an experienced parkour who was doing a simple parkour stunt ends up falling. She suddenly asks Hudson if his dog is supposed to do that. Hudson turned to look at Rex but Rex wasn’t doing anything, hence a distraction. Hudson turns again but Lizzy has disappeared. Rex sense her & she comes out of the door leading to the roof & explains what she did. She went down one floor.

Hudson checks the floor below the roof. The scene was wiped clean. Rex sensed someone as he heard the rag being wrangled out of water. Hudson shouts to the person to come out. The hooded suspect runs. Rex chases the suspect doing parkour to escape. But Rex loses him at the door. Hudson comforts Rex & says he has an idea on who it is.

Hudson visits the Fearless Freaks’ home. Their place is being checked by the police & Craig is sitting on the sofa. Hudson brings some evidence, a bucket & a cloth rag. Hudson used a cloth rag for Rex to smell out & identify the suspect. Rex goes to Craig; he was the suspect who ran. Hudson comments that this could be the world’s shortest manhunt.

At the forensics lab, Kyle’s autopsy was complete. Truong says that Kyle was dead 6 hours before falling off the roof. Mills & Hudson check the video again. They saw a bird tattoo. They  compared it to Kyle’s tattoo; it’s not a match.

As Hudson interrogates Craig, he notices that Craig’s arm looks red like something was scrubbed there. Hudson wants to know what happened. Craig admits that it was him in the video. He said they were all wasted. When they woke up, Kyle was dead. They didn’t want fans to know how he died. Kyle deserves an epic death. If Craig was dead, he was sure Kyle would do the same for him. Hudson says that it’s good that Daria told the same story. Hudson talks with Donovan. Hudson decides to check the scene again if it matches their story. At the Freaks’ home, the place was checked again. Some things still don’t match up & they found the murder weapon, a dumbbell.

Hudson visits Truong at the lab. Hudson sees a couple picture of Truong & her boyfriend in the computer screen & asks Truong as she enters. Truong said that she’s in a long distance relationship with her boyfriend, a doctor. Hudson mentions about his divorce. Hudson suggests she gets a dog like Rex jokingly.

At home, Hudson watches some videos. In a video, Kyle talks about his marriage proposal & plans to quit the Fearless Freaks. He says some things must come to an end.

Hudson decides to take a drastic measure with Craig & Daria. Using Rex as a polygraph, Hudson says Rex can smell a lie from a mile away. As Rex barks at them, they caved in & says they were passed out. The door was locked. Craig says they only have 3 keys. Then, Daria remembers that there are 4 keys. Kyle made a 4th key for Melissa, his fiance. Later on, in the observation room, Donovan says to Hudson it was a good idea, a lie-detecting dog. It was a bluff about Rex detecting lies. Hudson says it was handy as they believe it.

Melissa visits the police station with her dad, Ron. Hudson checks Melissa’s alibi & asks about her key. While looking for her key in her bag, her dad seems to try to stop her. Melissa couldn’t find her key. Then,Melissan remembers that since she always loses her key, Kyle installed an app that makes her keychain beep. She used the app & they could hear a beep. Rex went to the dad & approached his bag. They key is inside the dad’s bag. Hudson says this is normally where he’d asked if Ron would want a lawyer.

Ron didn’t want counsel & he’s representing himself. Hudson interrogates Ron. He claims he took them by mistake. Donovan takes over the interrogation. Donovan says that his workplace says he left early the day Kyle died, so his alibi doesn’t check. Ron claims that he’s with a woman. Donovan asked Ron questioningly about that. Donovan knows that Ron paid that woman to be his alibi & demands to know the truth. Ron relents. Earlier the day, Ron planted the coke, a cocaine bag with a blue crown, that he bought from a drug dealer. Ron doesn’t believe that Kyle will change; he believes an addict will always be an addict. Donovan tells Ron that Kyle’s tox screen report was clean; Kyle never used the planted coke.

Renley has a problem with Rex working in Major Crimes. As Hudson & Renley start arguing, Rex suddenly becomes aggressive & Hudson has a hard time calming Rex down. Renley did some gestures & says a command; then, Rex calms down. Renley points out to Hudson that Rex was trained to sense aggression.

Another alibi of Ron checks out; he’s not the murderer. Mills provides Hudson with some cases of the Fearless Freaks. With one case, Hudson recognizes the plaintiff’s name.

Hudson visits Lizzy. Lizzy was wronged by the Fearless Freaks. Her parkour moves were stolen & taken credit by the Fearless Freaks. However, Lizzy knows the case won’t go through. She did it as she doesn’t want to be called a poser by fans of Fearless Freaks. Lizzy had investigated the Fearless Freaks’ finances. It was split into 4 ways. There’s a 4th person & Lizzy mentions a Marc Trainer.

Hudson & Rex visit Marc Trainer again. Hudson talks briefly with Marc. Then, his phone rang. Marc steps out to take the call. While he’s away, Rex sniffed the suit jacket left behind. Hudson checks the jacket’s pockets & finds the cocaine bag with a blue crown. Marc comes back to see Hudson holding the cocaine bag. Marc runs for it. Rex chased after Marc. Marc runs away doing parkour. Marc was cornered. Marc tried to escape but seeks help as something goes wrong with his parkour trick. Marc tried to climb down but there’s not much grip. Marc is convinced it’ll be too late to ask for help. As Hudson reaches out to Marc, Marc thinks that their combined weight risks making them fall down. As Hudson holds onto Marc, Hudson orders Rex to fetch the hose. Rex brought the hose just in time & Marc climbed up using the hose. Hudson wished he’d seen the hose before trying to pull Marc up.

Marc was racking up debt despite working on Wall Street. As the Fearless Freaks haven’t paid him for the website, he went over to collect his share of the money. Marc claims it was self-defense & didn’t mean to kill Kyle. They argued. We see a flashback scene of what happened. A drunk Kyle found Marc going through their money. Kyle pinned Marc against the wall. Marc panicked, grabbed a nearby dumbbell & whacked Kyle’s head with it. Hudson asked how Marc locked the door. Marc answers that he did a parkour trick out the window. Hudson also asked why’d he take the coke. With everything that’s going on, Marc wanted a stress reliever, so he took the cocaine bag.

Hudson asked Donovan about Ron. Donovan doesn’t have much to say but off record, it felt damn good. Donovan informs Hudson that the complaint was retracted.

Hudson goes to Renley to thank her for retracting the complaint. Renley has no problem with Rex but with Hudson. But after hearing what they did, she changes her mind. Hudson is willing to take classes to be able to control Rex well. Hudson wants Renley to help him out. Renley replies she’ll see what she can do. Hudson does a hand gesture on his chest & Rex hugs him.

Hudson & Rex Season 1 Episode 2: Notes

Please pardon me if some scenes were switched in order as I’m remembering from memory & may have mixed up the events that happened. I did this review after a week & had no idea where to watch a rerun of it online.

Hudson & Rex Season 1 Episode 2: Opinion

Instead of showing Hudson, Lizzy distracts him by using Rex. I guess she distracted Hudson so she can test something. If she didn’t distract Hudson, Hudson may have tried to stop her.

I think what Craig & Daria did was foolish, changing how Kyle died. But autopsies don’t lie, so it was bound to come out what’s the true cause of death. If they weren’t careful in dumping Kyle’s body, they could have accidentally killed a passerby. It could have been worse for them, they’ll be either murder suspects or accomplices to murder. Luckily, the man got out of his car & was a few distance away. Though, it would probably be according to the scriptwriter. We can’t change how we die. We have no control over it; death just happens even when we don’t expect it.

I really don’t like Ron’s attitude. He’s so discriminative against Kyle & never believed he’s change. Ron was even thinking of setting up Kyle with drugs. I think it was Melissa who truly changed Kyle for the better. Kyle was even willing to quit the Fearless Freaks to start a new life with her. Some people can change. Some people don’t. People can change for the better & acknowledge their mistakes. Whereas, some people don’t change & don’t see their wrongdoings. I think Ron & Melissa’s relationship may be strained for some time due to what Ron did.

Marc could’ve just talked to the Fearless Freaks for his share of the money since he made their website. He had to sneak in, try to steal money & accidentally kill Kyle. I think things could’ve been better. And who knows they may even help out with his debts as they were friends or ex-colleague.

One thing I learned from Rex chasing down the suspect & losing him at the door is that a dog can’t chase you anymore if you lock the door before the dog comes or if it’s an auto-lock door. It’s kinda helpful if you were chased unexpectedly by a dog in the urban community. Though I don’t know what to do if a dog chases you in a rural area. I only heard from a friend that if you spot a dog snarling at you or an angry dog, you must stay still no matter what. But something happened with another friend, my 3 friends were in a rural area & they encountered an angry dog. Two of them stayed still but the 3rd one ended up running despite my friend telling her to stay still earlier. So, she ends up being chased around while my 2 still friends could only look at her helplessly. Fortunately, a local there helps out my 3rd friend by throwing some rocks at the dog to scare it away. Thus, the chase ended.

I’m glad Hudson acknowledges that sometimes he can’t control Rex & seeks Renley’s help. It’s good that they go from against each other to becoming on good terms.
